Hans Neumann was born in Lima, Peru. A difficult city where art isn’t easily pursued as a way of making a living, he decided to study law and political science at Universidad de Lima, with hopes of one day becoming a writer.
Always inspired by imagery and influenced by narrative Hans started learning photography and lighting for cinema in tandem to his law practice. Finally, in 2003 he graduated and started his career as a photographer. He moved to New York City shortly after, where he enrolled to continue his studies at the International Center for Photography.
Through this process, he found himself assisting photographers such as Cedric Buchet and David Eustace. In 2008, he met fellow Peruvian photographer, Mario Testino, for whom he worked for two years in London. Hans now lives full-time between New York and Europe where he continues to develop his language, always and still inspired by story telling and documentary. Hans tries through his images and films to convey the stories of real people that exist in his world or sometimes characters created from his imagination. His work focuses on identity, community and the idea of home. His first photography book, Nuevo New York, came out in November 2016 followed by his self published quarterly Ensayo.
